After each part, he asked us if we wanted to take a picture of it, so we did. Then he asked us if we wanted to touch it, so we did. Most people's immediate reaction was to be disgusted and stop touching the organs. Touching the internal organs of a mammal made me feel a little nauseous but not enough to make me want to back away from the table. When we got to the lungs, our teacher used a tube to inflate them. Mr. Heathcote allowed students to take turns inflating the goat’s lungs with a tube as well. In the end, walking into the classroom to see an actual digestive system lying on a table was shocking. But it was a special learning experience!

The AISL Board of Directors will hold their second open board meeting on Monday, 09 October at 18:00 in the Protea Tree Conference Room. All members of the AISL parent association are welcome to attend. The items on the agenda are as follows:
What I am excited about this week…
Strolling down the hallway wondering how many emails I received since leaving my office, the interesting sound of a handsaw at work caught my attention. Upon entering Ms. Schwarzkopf's grade seven Design class, I was greeted with a wonderful sight, 19 students working on different projects all at different stages of the design cycle. Each student was tasked to make an innovative item out of used resources. Some students were penning sketches of their ideas, others were deep into researching their topic, while others were in the midst of creation. The part that made me smile the most was that the students were so deeply engaged, they were completely unaware of me taking pictures. I love seeing creativity in progress! Great job, Ms. Schwarzkopf and students! ~Ty
Once again, I would like to remind all Secondary parents of the Student-Involved Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 11 and Thursday, October 12 from 13:00 to 17:00 in the Library. What do we mean by "student-involved"? We encourage parents to bring their child(ren) with them as you discuss her/his progress through the first quarter. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Mr. Gregg Cottrell teaches DP Physics at AISL and has been teaching for over 35 years. He first realized he was a “teacher” when he helped his younger brother solve math problems as kids. Gregg first stepped into a classroom in Arcada, California, to teach 9th grade science and math. What has kept him in the profession for so many years? Making a difference in kids lives! Walking through his small California hometown, doctors, lawyers, mechanics, and other community members often stop him and thank him for his teaching, even years later. When Mr. Cottrell was growing up teachers didn’t recognize all the different ways children learn. He learned differently and struggled to read and write. Then Mrs. Harrison came to the rescue when Gregg was in 3rd grade and helped him to get on the right path. It’s been a love of learning ever since. In the years since Mr. Cottrell studied physics, there have been significant changes and additions to current knowledge, which means Mr. Cottrell is still excited to learn and read about physics. Here at AISL, Mr. Cottrell supports student learning by building relationships, teaching positive thinking, and being honest with his students. Under Mr. Cottrell’s guidance, AISL students have achieved scores of 7 on internal IB assessments and external exams. Thank you, Mr. Cottrell for sharing your love of learning with the AISL community. Dear Primary Parents, Please join us this Friday, 6 October at 7:30am in the Protea for our next Primary Parent Group. We will continue our discussion around boundaries and explore how having them in place helps build empathy and compassion in our children. Please find an explanation below on the ABC method of discipline compiled by South African psychologist, Kerry Weaver, which will support our conversation.
