Dear AISL Community,
Thank you all so very much for your wonderful support in getting library materials back to us for our annual inventory and for taking care of bills for lost items. This allows us to take stock of our collection, weed items in poor condition, and identify gaps where replacement items are needed. Book checkouts will resume Monday 31 May! Patrons may have up to five items out at a time. We can't wait to help our patrons make their "holiday stacks" for vacation reading. Any books checked out beginning Monday 31 May will have a return date of 9 August (the first day of school). Note that you may return books any time after school closes by dropping them with the guards at the secondary entrance gate (where secondary students normally enter campus). Book Requests Over the Break Please use THIS Google Form to request books during the long break (the form is also on our website and virtual library). We will offer two opportunities to request books during the long break as follows: Thursday July 1: Requests due by 09:00 Friday July 2: Book pick-ups along the main drop-off loop from 09:00-18:00 Thursday July 22: Requests due by 09:00 Friday July 23: Book pick-ups along the main drop-off loop from 09:00-18:00 Audio Books Audiosync Audiosync is back with their annual free audiobook downloads each week (see image below for upcoming titles). The books are geared toward a YA (young adult- roughly ages 13 or 14 and up) audience and are paired thematically. There are two main steps: 1. One will need to visit the site and register 2. The app for downloading the books is called SORA (it's the student version of Overdrive), which needs to be installed on the device that will be used. Once you download the books, they are yours to keep! The catch, though, is that you cannot go back and download books from previous weeks. This week's pairing is fantastic! One of the selections is Of Beetles and Angels by Mawi Asgedom, the story of a Mawi's own journey from a refugee camp in Sudan to a full-ride scholarship to Harvard. Tales2Go Tales2Go is an incredible collection of more than 6,000 audio books for children all the way through young adults and is one of our AISL Library subscription services for the community. The app works best (though you can use Desktop) and you can save bookmarks across two devices. There are also French and Spanish offerings among the titles. Each student has a unique log-in ID based on this format: graduation year + first initial + last name (example: 2026jsmith). The password is zambia. For more information on how to log in, here is Ms. Maguire's video tutorial on Tales2Go. Although you do not download audio books, you can load a segment at a time on any device and each segment is about 1-2 hours long. To load the next segment for off-line listening you would simply need to use some data or connect to wifi briefly. As always, if any member of our library team may help provide recommendations for anyone in your family, please let us know! Last week on Friday 21st May, AISL hosted the first track and field event this year against Musikili, Martin House and LICS. It was a tough competition but our leopards came through as always! Congratulations to Chris for taking first place in the U19 individual competition. Well done Leopards! Last week on Friday 14th May, AISL hosted our first U13 Doubles Tournament against Muskili school.
The fun continued on Saturday 15 May for the U13 singles tournament against Musikili school once again. We are super proud of our U13 leopards who played extremely well despite the heat Thank you to all our participants who did an amazing job and a big congratulations to Filip, who took first place in the U13 Boys Singles Tournament . Go Leopards! Last week on Friday 14th May, AISL hosted the first invitational golf tournament this academic year at Bonanza Golf Club. Golfers competed in pairs, playing the“greensome” format. Each player had to drive a ball and the pair then chose which ball to play. Each pair of golfers played three holes against all the other pairs in their age group, which was either U13 or U19. A point was gained for winning a hole, half a point for a drawn hole and no point for a loss. It was fabulous to be able to watch the live sport as two Musikili golfers competed in the U13 competition along with six Martin House golfers, while AISL had four U13 golfers, Neel partnered with Anay and Caleb partnered with Mubanga. Well done to all the U13 and U19 golfers as it was a hot day but they all managed to pull through. There was some very good golf played in both age groups. AISL had six U19 golfers, Neelay and Rohan, Scott and Cross, Ashu and Lovis competing against each other and the two teams from Martin House, Shivam and JP along with Justin and Rory. The AISL golfers are looking forward to the restart of school in August and more golf competitions. Our Grade 11 DP Visual Arts students went on an actual (not a virtual!) field trip this past Friday to Chaminuka Lodge. Chaminuka is located near the international airport and offers the largest private collection of African art in Zambia. This was the perfect venue for a field trip because the lodge is open to the air and many of the art pieces are sculptures set throughout the beautiful grounds. Some students were gathering information for their Comparative Studies, one of the major assessments for DP Visual Arts, and others were researching specific Zambian artists for Visual Arts Extended Essays. The field trip presented an outstanding opportunity to learn about Zambian art, and there are even pieces in the collection by two of our AISL Visual Arts teachers: Ms. Laurey Nevers (Secondary School Visual Arts) and Mr. Mwamba Mulangala (Primary School Visual Arts). Chaminuka also has an incredible collection of traditional art that we were able to explore. We are all grateful to the Chaminuka staff for warmly welcoming our students for this wonderful learning opportunity. If you have not been to Chaminuka, it is well worth a trip!
Photos T. Maguire International School of Uganda will be hosting the ISSEA virtual assembly on Friday 23 April from 9am.
All parents and students are welcome to join in! Here is the link for the live stream ISSEA virtual assembly EXTRAVAGANZA! Students in Ms. Cullen's Grade 7 Individuals & Societies class created videos based on special cultural traditions that they celebrate. The student videos are every bit as diverse as our student body itself. Some video titles included:
7A Individuals & Societies This is My Culture Films 7B Individuals & Societies This is My Culture Films Please feel welcome to share the links to these playlists with your loved ones in other parts of the world. We will be using these videos for some of our Worldfest! learning experiences next week. Enjoy! A committee of AISL teachers and community members have been meeting regularly to plan this year's Worldfest! The pandemic has inspired innovative thinking and flexible planning, which has led to some excellent ideas for this year's Worldfest! The theme of this year's Worldfest! is Stronger Together. We felt that this theme captured the resilience we have experienced as a community and as individual families as a result of the support we have given each other across this past year. Our students and our own children have demonstrated incredible strength throughout the pandemic. In the spirit of this year's theme, you may wish to add your own family's story to this Save the Children website page devoted to having families share up to 150 characters about the way that their own children have inspired them during the pandemic. Sharing family stories of overcoming hardship around the dinner table is also a great way to remind children of how we can persevere through adversity. We look forward to sharing more news about Worldfest! as plans develop. Image credit: "Hands" by truthseeker08 on Pixabay This past Friday we filled every available space for our 50-person max HS Coffee House. Students and teachers gathered on the deck of the Palm Pavilion under the brilliantly clear stars and enjoyed thirteen performances. The acts included song, instrumental pieces, dance, a TED Talk, juggling, and poetry. As usual, our students created such a safe and supportive atmosphere that at the end of the scheduled performances, a couple students summoned the courage to step up to the mic and share. Our HS Student Council did a fantastic job of organizing the event, which includes promoting, set-up, emceeing, and clean-up.
This HS Coffee House was a bittersweet one for our seniors, as it was their last before graduation. We would like to recognize some of our seniors by name:
Mr. Illingworth, our Band Director, and Ms. Maguire, our Secondary School Librarian, will be moving on at the end of this year and have loved supporting and helping to grow the creative arts culture at AISL. They are confident that it has become such an ingrained part of AISL that the students will carry it forward! Photos by T.Maguire & S. Seiler AISL is excited to be participating in the 2021 Virtual ISSEA Band and Choir that will be hosted by International School of Tanganyika(IST) on Friday 16 April.
