As you may recall, we had to postpone our visit from Zimbabwean spoken word / performing artist Samm Farai due to political issues in Zimbabwe last semester. We are thrilled to have him rebooked and coming soon! Mr. Farai, also known as Comrade Fatso, is a renowned stand-up comedian, poet, song-writer, and is also the producer of the satirical news show Zambezi News (a bit like The Daily Show). He was recognized as the 2016 Comedian of the Year at the African Entertainment Awards (USA) & was chosen as one of the Top 60 Emerging Young African Democracy Leaders at the 2015 World Movement for Democracy Awards (USA). During the week of February 5-9, Mr. Farai will work with our secondary students, exploring using humor as a weapon, writing political satire, sharpening public speaking skills, and more. We will kick off the week with two assemblies on Monday, 5 February- one for middle school students (gr6-8) and one for secondary students (gr9-12). Mr. Farai will help middle school students prepare for their Coffee House on Wednesday, 7 February (08:30-09:30) in the Zone. On the night of Friday, 9 February, Mr. Farai will join upper secondary students (Grades 9-12 only) for our Coffee House Night in the library (19.00-21.00 free!).

Welcome to 2018, grade 12 students, otherwise known as the Class of 2018! The countdown to May exams has begun. With just over three months to go, grade 12 students should be taking advantage of every opportunity to be successful. Some advice from students who have successfully been awarded the full IB diploma:
1. Begin reviewing topics from grade 11 and re-make notes. 2. Set up a study schedule for yourself so that you chunk out your learning one day at a time; it's impossible to cram for the IB exams! 3. Find a study space at school and at home: DASH (Diploma Additional Support + Help) after school, the library study spaces, teacher classrooms during lunch and after school, as well as the DP Student Lounge. Mock exams for Grade 12 students will be February 12 - 15th, 2018. The purpose of mock exams is to create an authentic examination environment that simulates the May testing conditions. Exams will run for two to four hours each day and are a great practice for students to see what it takes to persevere through day after day of testing. Mock exams will be held in the Protea Room and the Library Conference Room, the same rooms as the May exams sessions. Grade 12 students also take mock exams in their classes, so they will have the opportunity to experience and practice all of the different "papers" that each subject offers. Each student's exam schedule varies, depending on their course selection so on some days students may come to school late or leave early. The hidden secret to success on the Mocks Exams and the May Exams is plenty of sleep the night before and spreading out the studying over weeks! Good luck, students.
Last week our Middle School Mathletes jumped right in with our third Math Olympiad contest. Mark you calendars as our fourth contest will be held during the week of 14 February. Keep up the effort Mathletes!
The second week back from holiday has started smoothly. It is always a challenge to get back into the school routine after a long break. We are happy to say all of our MS students are settling in nicely. With the gym renovations on the horizon, the Tuck Shop has relocated to behind C–Block, the yellow container next to the walkway. As this new space is a bit smaller, and we want to ensure all students are able to get food in a timely fashion, Middle School students will now start lunch 5 minutes earlier than High School students. Last week, students had the opportunity to sign up for ASA's during advisory. Remember, ASA's start on Wednesday, 24 January. Please don't forget we also have Middle School Tutoring/Homework Assistance in C4 aka "The Zone" on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 14:45 - 15:30. No sign up is necessary and this is a great place to work on assignments while waiting for a second session ASA. We are looking forward to our Middle School Neon Dance this Friday 26 January 18:00 – 20:00. Way to go MS Student Council for all of the hard work and effort you have put into planning this event. We are excited about our upcoming Visiting Author Samm Farai who will be with us the week of 5 February. In honor of his visit, we will host our second Middle School Coffee House on Wednesday, 7 February in the Zone, 08:30 – 09:30. We are looking forward to seeing our Middle School Students show off their talents. Please encourage your child to participate. During our last MS Coffee House and our End of Term Assembly, our Grade 6 student, Ishaan Gurazada, shared this original poem: Whispers
As the sun shines, I hear whispers. Some chirp while the rest flap their feathers but they still whisper. They come closer to me as the sun shines harder Those are the whispers of happiness As it rains, I still hear some whispers. Some bang onto the ground while some just move their leaves around They move away from me as the rain becomes more powerful Those are the whispers of sadness As the weather gets cold, I don't hear so many whispers They just breath in really fast pace Their breath becomes darker as the weather gets colder Those are the whispers of fear Then, as the flowers bloom, I hear many whispers. Most of them whistle happily going through flower and flower. They either come closer or move away but, I can still hear those whispers Those are the whispers of hope And there are times where I can hear all of those whispers They always build me up to who I am today I can hear them more clear as they come even near Those are the whispers of life
Designs must be submitted to the primary office, care of Ms. Leverne, by Friday, 2 February.
Thanks for your help!! We have our first session of 2018 happening Friday, 2 February in the Protea Room, 07:30 - 08:30. Please join Jenn and Noa in discussing new year resolutions for you and your child. We will also plan the remaining meeting times. We are looking forward to seeing you all again!
What I'm excited about this week:
I thought it might be fun to start a new column in the Leopard’s Tale where I shared interesting facts about the school. So, here goes:
Did you know that AISL is one of only 356 IB Continuum Schools in the world? An IB “World School” is one that offers one or more of the IB’s programs while a “Continuum School” is one that offers all three of IB’s major programs: Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme. |

The Leopard's Tale is our main medium to keep our families informed on such things as the day to day happenings on campus, after school activities, summaries of any arts and sports events, helpful resources, and important dates and reminders.
