Welcome back! It is so wonderful to see all the rested and smiling faces here at AISL after our month-long holiday. The students are very excited to be back, meeting up with familiar and new friends. Fourteen new Primary students will be joining us this semester.
This is a reminder that sign-ups for Term 2 of After School Activities (ASAs) for G1-G5 will take place from 18-21 January. If you need any assistance with sign-ups, please contact Christine Moono (cmoono@aislusaka.org) on the upper floor of the Secondary Gym. Activities will begin on Wednesday, 24 January. Please pick up your child at the Primary Waiting Hut at 15:40 on days that they are attending an activity (Monday-Thursday) and at 13:40 on Fridays. On days that your child is not attending an after-school activity, remember that parents/caregivers are required to collect the students at their classroom for Grades 1, 2 & 3. Students in G4 and G5 are welcome to meet their families at the Waiting Hut or another pre-arranged area on campus. Finally, please make sure your child has a hat and water bottle each day. The weather is still very hot and they need to take precautions from the sun. Remember to label ALL of your child's items from lunch boxes to sweatshirts so that we can keep our Lost and Found to a minimum. It is lovely to see all of you back. We are looking forward to a great second semester. On Tuesday, 23 January, at 7:30 in the Protea Room, we will be hosting a PYP Parent Information Session focusing on how we support and share student learning in the PYP through assessment and reporting. Integral to students' learning is understanding where they are now and their next steps. To support this understanding, data collection through formal and informal assessments is essential to all teaching and learning in the PYP. Learn how we gather evidence of student learning and use that data to inform instruction in the classroom. Tony Potts, the Primary Assistant Principal for Technology and Innovation, and Christine Kelly, the Primary Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning, will jointly be leading this session. If you have specific questions that you wish to have addressed during the session related to the topic, please email Christine Kelly at ckelly@aislusaka.org by Friday, 19 January. We look forward to seeing you there. Dear Parents,
I hope that this email finds you well. I have really appreciated everyone's patience and support as we worked to gain approval for reopening the school. As stated in yesterday's email to the community, we will fully reopen on Tuesday, 16 January, as originally scheduled. Due to the cholera outbreak, we have put several precautions in place that will have a direct effect on our AISL community:
Best regards, Russ Menard Dear Parents,
Thank you again for your patience and understanding as we worked to ensure both the continuity of our educational program and the health and safety of the AISL community. I am particularly grateful to the Embassy of the United States including USAID and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, both of which have been actively communicating with the Ministry of Health on our behalf. This morning we had a very successful campus inspection by the Ministry of Health. The Ministry has since indicated to the embassy that we may reopen, on schedule, this Tuesday, 16 January. We are grateful to the Ministry for this permission and will continue to ensure that our campus is a safe place for our community. Our understanding is that the Zambian Government will also be communicating more details regarding the opening of local and international schools shortly as the the number of cholera cases appears to have plateaued. In a previous email, I outlined the significant measures we have taken to ensure a very high level of sanitation and hygiene on our campus as well as additional education for staff regarding cholera prevention. We extend our thanks again to our Health and Safety Officer, Martina Van Vlaanderen, and her team for their efforts. We will continue these measures for the time being and may, upon advice from health experts, add additional precautions. We will be sure to notify the community of any additional measures that may be necessary. If you would like to learn more about the measures we have taken, please feel welcome to attend one of our two information sessions for parents. Please feel free to join me in the Protea Room at 18:00 on 15 January or at 07:30 on 16 January. As always, if you have any specific concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at rmenard@aislusaka.org. Thank you for your patience and support. Sincerely, Russ Menard Dear Parents,
As many of you are aware, parts of Lusaka have suffered an outbreak of cholera. This has led the Ministries of Health and Education to declare that schools should be closed and there should be no public gatherings until the outbreak has been contained. That directive is scheduled to be reviewed on January 30. The AISL administration and the U.S Embassy will be monitoring the situation and liaising with the relevant authorities before making a final decision regarding re-opening on schedule on Tuesday, 16 January. Fortunately, we have the benefit of some time to allow the situation to become more clear and the Board of Directors will make a final decision on our course of action by Friday, 12 January. We hope that we can find a solution that will ensure the health and safety of our community while also ensuring the continuity of our children's education. Due to the government's directive against public gatherings, we will cancel any sports practices, sports camps, and our library's holiday hours until further notice. We very much appreciate your patience and understanding as we determine how best to move forward in this difficult time. Sincerely, Russ Menard There are many great reasons for choosing to study the IB Programme. Here is a link to one site that shares an overview of IB, the benefits of the programme as well as some tips for success...:
