Parent class: Wednesday mornings, 8 am to 9 am
February 22 ‐ March 29 Library Conference Room Last semester our AISL Library & Discovery Center piloted a 5-‐part beginner Nyanja class with Uncle Jebby, hosted in the library conference room. A small group of parents took the class Wednesday mornings and a group of teachers took it on Wednesday afternoons. It was such a successful pilot that we’d like to offer it again later this month. The cost of the five‐part class is 400 kwacha, paid in full directly to Uncle Jebby at the first lesson. There is also a modest additional charge for his transportation, divided among the participants. Learning some basic greetings and vocabulary is a wonderful way to connect with the people of our incredible host country. Uncle Jebby integrates cultural material into the lessons, too. There is room for 10 people in the class on a first‐come, first serve basis. Please email uncle7jebby@gmail.com to reserve your space.

Next week our author‐in-residence, Mr. John Coy, will be working with students in grades 4 and up on the writing process and sharing his experiences about publishing and writing as a career. Mr. Coy is a renowned writer who has published books for children of all ages. Sports fiction is a particular subject of interest for him (see last week’s LT). His works have earned “starred reviews” in many major publications reviewing literature. Mr. Coy will host an informal Meet The Author evening in the PAC next Wednesday from 5:00‐5:45 at which he will talk about his life as an author and share excerpts from his work. His books will be available for purchase. Please join us! Enormous Thanks!
If you were unable to attend the ISSEA Rugby festival that we held at the Secondary School this past weekend, you missed out on an amazing event! It was an incredible atmosphere of athletics, sportsmanship, and plenty of mud. Despite the adverse conditions, participants and spectators together had an amazingly positive experience. A special thanks goes out to everyone that made the event possible: • Thanks to all of the students and parents who attended. An extra special thanks to those parents that attended but didn’t have any kids playing. Your Leopard spirit is admirable. • Thanks to all of our host families. You no doubt went through plenty of food and laundry detergent. Thanks for caring so much. • Thanks to Nurse Jennifer who attended to the players. Thankfully, the athletes didn’t keep you too busy. • Thank you to the members of the PTA that set up the coach's room and kept it well stocked. • Thanks to the student volunteers that did all of the dirty work (literally) behind the scenes. • Thanks to our two coaches, Pete Lawton and Edward Chow‐Worn, for spending three entire days on your feet instructing the youngsters. • Thank you to all of the students, grades 6‐12, who participated in the event. We hope you enjoyed playing as much as we enjoyed watching you. • Thank you to Christine Moono, Chulu Chansa, and Bupe Mulenga for your dedication to pulling off the logistics of the event. • Thank you to Mark Hoffman. Only you know how much time, energy, and heart you put into this tournament and ensuring our Leopards have a positive experience in all of their ASAs.
February 7 – Grade 10 IB Diploma Program Course Selection
As you know, AISL offers a very broad range of programs, many of which may be new to you. To help all parents understand the many facets of our school, we are offering an ongoing series of information sessions every Tuesday morning from 07:30-°08:30. If you can, please plan to join us for a coffee or tea and learn more about AISL. We are proud of our programs and want you to learn more so you can be equally proud that you have made the decision to join the AISL community. On Tuesday, February 7, parents of Grade 10 students should try to attend a helpful session hosted by our University Counselor, Ms. Julie Baldry and our DP Coordinator, Ms. Becky Oliver. She will provide an overview of the course selection process for Grade 10 students as they prepare to enter the IB Diploma Program. She will also provide information about the first steps of the university selection process. This presentation is targeted toward the parents of students in Grades 10 but all are welcome. ISSEA Rugby! The ISSEA Rugby 2017 Tournament is finally upon us. Students from the American International School of Johannesburg, the International School of Kenya, and the International Community School of Addis Ababa arrived on Wednesday. Rugby games will occur throughout the day on Friday, and Saturday (February 3‐4). Saturday will include some teams from other Zambian schools as well. Please come and cheer on the Leopards.
ISSEA Swimming and Basketball! This week our ISSEA Swimming and Basketball teams are competing at the International School of Kenya in Nairobi and the International School of Tanganyika in Dar es Salaam, respectively. These tournaments, along with the Rugby tournament at AISL, represent many weeks of intense training for young people who are also committed to academics, service, leadership, and all other aspects of a well-rounded AISL education. I am always humbled by the dedication and energy of our scholar-athletes. Go Leopards! PTA! Congratulations to the new PTA Coordinating Committee. Nikki Zeravica has taken on the role of Primary School Coordinator, Mary Krafft will be our Secondary School Coordinator, Deborah Chibonga will be the Treasurer, and Jane Okafor will be the new Secretary. I am thrilled to see that the PTA will continue on with strong leadership for the next year. Please watch the Leopard Tale for ways to get involved. Also, please join me in thanking the outgoing PTA Coordinator, Bridget Rathbone, and her team for their tireless dedication to the school. Their vision and commitment energized a flagging PTA and turned it into a vibrant and active organization. Although stepping down from their leadership positions, I am thrilled to know that they will still be involved and that we can continue to count on their energy and enthusiasm. The 100th Day of School Celebration! On Tuesday, February 7 the Primary School will be celebrating our 100th day of school this year. This provides a great opportunity to celebrate and to explore the number 100 through the lenses of numerous subject areas. See the Primary School for more information. In the minutes below you will find information on linked to the Library design, School Initiatives and update on the master site plan.
Grade 2 Workshare Thank you to all of our Grade 2 parents who came to support the students’ workshare last Friday. There was a wonderful turnout. Your positive energy and support for your child’s learning was very inspirational for them and made them feel very proud to share their projects. Semester 1 Report Cards This is just a reminder that the Semester 1 report cards were sent to all families via Managebac this past Monday. We hope everyone has received the report. If you have questions or need any clarifications on the grades and/or comments, please see the teacher of that subject area directly. If you need any assistance with accessing your child’s report on Managebac, please see Leverne Hinze in the Primary Office. She will be very happy to assist you. 100th Day of School Celebration
Your input matters In our continued efforts to refine our practices, the AISL Primary School would like parent feedback on Home Learning and how their child’s progress is shared. For the purpose of this survey, Home Learning is any task set by your child's homeroom teacher to further their understanding of school related areas. Please complete the survey with the link here, by Friday, February 10th. Thank you so much for your participation and feedback to support student learning at AISL. Support for ‘Every Orphan's Hope’ On Friday, 20 January, there was Classic Movie day for Primary students organised by the Every Orphan's Hope Community Service Day team. The movie was free, based solely on donations and the sale of food. Every Orphan's Hope raised 823 Kwacha. On that note, Every Orphan's Hope says a big Thank You to everyone who helped to make this day a success. Thank you for supporting this initiative from some of our Secondary students.
