Please join us for an exploration into Primary School Guidance Program on Tuesday, 28 March at 7:30 in the Protea Tree Conference Room. Learn what strategies we use at school to support the emotional and social growth of our students. Discuss the beliefs and boundaries that help students reach their potential. Learn the common language we share that helps students express their feelings and resolve conflicts in respectful ways. Understand how we support our students as they work through restorative justice and maintain healthy relationships within their school community. We hope to see many of you there!

Last week I gave a presentation on the importance of sleep for not only our students, but for all of us. That presentation can be found here. We often overlook the importance of sleep on our overall wellness, and for our students, how it affects their performance. Some may even take great pride in sacrificing their sleep for more studies or work. However, with new technology, we have learned that sacrificing sleep for better performance is absurd. Check out this website to learn more about the effects of sleep deprivation and this short video (also embedded below!) on why sleep is important. If you would like to go more extensively into the topic (which I hope you do), please feel free to see this TED Talk by Russell Foster, a circadian neuroscientist, entitled Why Do We Sleep?
Today the secondary Model United Nations team is hosting the 2nd ZAMMUN Conference ever to be held within Zambia, started by the AISL MUN chapter. Congrats to our students that planned and are coordinating the event for over 110 students from 6 area schools. A special thanks goes to Ms. Laura Lo Castro, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Zambia for her inspiring speech in the opening ceremonies and to Ingrid Turner and Chris McDonald for their leadership of our students as the MUN teacher sponsors.
The sun is back in Lusaka, and it brightened another great Community and Service Day. Our campus was buzzing with activity as our CSD groups were busy contributing to the AISL and greater Lusaka community. I am extremely proud of our students for working hard and giving selflessly. Enjoy these pictures from some of the action:
What I am excited about this week…
1. National Honor Society Induction! Congratulations to the newest members of our National Honor Society (NHS) chapter. They were inducted in a ceremony in the PAC on Tuesday, March 14. Membership in NHS is reserved for students who have demonstrated the highest levels of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. To earn membership is a significant achievement. We should all be proud of our new inductees. 2. ZAMMUN! On Saturday, we will host our second Zambian Model United Nations (ZAMMUN). This event will include 112 students from six Lusaka schools working together to solve world problems in a simulation of the United Nations. What is most impressive about this event is that it was entirely planned and coordinated by the students from our own MUN team. Well done! 3. ISAZ U19 National Soccer Championship! On Friday and Saturday our Boys AND Girls U19 Soccer teams will be vying for Xirst place in the ISAZ National Championships at Baobab College. Go Leopards! 4. AISL’s 30th Anniversary Party! This is AISL’s 30th year of offering a high quality international education. Please “save the date” and plan to join us for a fun celebration of this milestone on Saturday, May 6th from 1900 until late! More details to follow soon. Many of us have hundreds if not thousands of photographs saved on our devices from memorable experiences in Lusaka and beyond. When we view these photographs with the attributes of the IB learner profile in mind, we might notice many represent aspects of an international education.
Students, parents and faculty, we encourage you to enter the third annual Learner Profile Photo contest by sharing an image that represents one of the ten attributes of the IB Learner Profile: balanced, caring, open minded, principled, communicator, risk taker (courageous), inquirer, reflective, knowledgeable and thinker. Please email photos to our PYP coordinator, Chye de Ryckel. Winning photographs will be included in the 2017/18 AISL wall calendar. Entries due Monday 27 March. Student Led Conferences (SLC’s) will take place on Wednesday 5 April and Thursday 6 April in Primary School classrooms from 13:00 -17:00. While the Listening Conferences in September were parent directed and the Parent Teacher conferences in October were teacher directed, the Student Led Conferences offer students the opportunity to take the lead in sharing their progress in learning. Although we have already had many important conversations during this school year in addition to work shares after units of inquiry; assessed work; report cards; and informal conferences this is an opportunity to celebrate each student’s success and review goals for the remainder of the academic year. From Grade 1 - Grade5, there will also be a ten minute goal setting session during the Student Led Conference time.
More details regarding the signup process will be coming soon.
Next week, the Middle School Student Council is hosting a spirit week for students in grades 6-8. As an element of the week, students are encouraged to dress creatively on designated days. Please see the schedule below:
