Students from Grade 2 to Grade 10 will begin the fall session for MAP Growth assessments starting on Monday, 3 September. Over the next three weeks, students in Grades 3-10 will complete three MAP Growth assessments in the areas of math, reading and language usage, and Grade 2 students will complete two assessments in math and reading. Data from these assessments will be used by teachers to inform their differentiated instruction, supporting specific skills for each child. Once we have completed all of the assessments, your child's MAP progress report will be available for you to view via your Managebac account. For more information about the MAP Growth assessments, the NWEA's Parent's Guide to MAP Growth is attached. Should you have any specific questions, please feel free to follow up with Darlene Huson, the Primary Principal, or Sheila Seiler, the Secondary Assistant Principal.
Is there anything that smells as fabulous as a new book? Our library shipment has arrived and we are excitedly processing approximately 1400 new titles to get them into the hands of our students (and community members) as quickly as possible!
In secondary, both our middle school fiction & young adult fiction sections are "genrified"- meaning sorted into more than a dozen sub-categories of fiction (adventure, fantasy, sci fi, supernatural, mystery, and so on). This means that we have several additional processing steps to take once we receive the books- but the results are worth it because secondary students say that they find book selections much easier when they "shop a shelf" and they also end up sampling other genres, too! We are very grateful to many of our students who help us with this process. We'll be displaying new items as we process them and can't wait for you to come and see them! Our entire library team is always ready to help you find a fantastic next read. Don't forget that we're also open Saturdays from 9.00 - 14.00. About a week and half ago an owlet was found on the front lawn near the library. To ensure the best chance for survival, research was done including calling a Raptor Center in the United States for advice. We placed the owlet in a fake nest near the original site, the parents continued to feed the baby during the night and the nest was cleaned daily (by us!) as ants were invading the dirty nest before another owlet was found on the lawn and added to the fake nest. Late last week, both owlets flew the coop and joined their parents in the trees near the ELC/Kindergarten. It is our continued hope that they will grow stronger, with no further human intervention, and will find homes of their own. A huge thanks to all who were involved in this endeavour and, if you go to search for the owls, please do not handle them and observe as quietly as you can…! Grade 2 students are currently inquiring into the central idea, 'The choices we make affect our health'. The Grade Two and Physical Education teachers have planned learning engagements together to extend the thinking of the students. During the PE classes, students are learning about healthy and unhealthy foods and the importance of physical exercise. These photos show the students playing an energetic game of Fatty Food Tag.
Today, the Secondary hosted the annual Community and Service Day (CSD) assembly. CSDs are an integral part of our school identity and how we fit into the local community. Six days during the school year are dedicated towards CSD. During these days, 21 different groups, led by student leaders under the guidance of teaching faculty, extend service and goodwill into the local and school community. This morning, the student body was introduced to each group through the 2017-18 end of year video and given a brief intro into for each group. This was followed up by the CSD fair where students met with the student leaders for each group, asked questions, and learned more details about the goals and activities of each group. Next week students will be ask to select which group they would like to join for the year. For a great introduction to CSD, please see the end of the year video created by Maddie Barr. Thank you to all of the parents that came to the special parent presentation this morning concerning the mixed grade level courses. For those that were unable to attend, please find here the presentation that was given complete with a resources slide containing a variety of data resources to support mixed grade level courses.
What I am excited about this week…
PTA Meeting! The Parent-Teacher Association will be holding its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, 28 August at 07:30 in the Protea Tree Conference Room. All parents are welcome. Please come to learn about some of the great events that the PTA is planning that will support our students and community. Also, please seriously consider pitching in to help. You do not need to make a huge commitment; a few hours here and there can really make a difference. Library Orientation Session for Parents! Our brilliant Library and Discovery Center is a learning and social hub for students and parents alike. Please take a few minutes to go in, meet the staff, and see how much is on offer. A great time to do that will be the Library Orientation Session for Parents that is planned for 28 August from 08:15-08:45 (after the PTA meeting). I am confident that you will be amazed by the scope of our library’s collection and programming. Primary School Listening Conferences! Please make a point of participating in this year’s Primary School Listening Conferences. These are great opportunities for you to help our teachers to better understand your child(ren).
