After School Activities started this week on Monday, it's not too late to Sign Up!
Pass through the Activities Office in the Gym OR better still drop us an email at activities@aislusaka.org and we will be glad to assist. All parents interested in meeting our library & IT staff and learning a bit more about the library / IT programs we offer & resources we have are cordially invited to a brief, informal orientation next Tuesday 28 August from 8.15-8.45 in the library following the PTA meeting. If you are new, this is also a chance to open an account and take some books home! We're also excited to show you some of the new spaces we've created across last semester and over the holiday. Libraries are no longer places centered around books on the shelves where patrons are expected to be quiet- they are dynamic, flexible learning hubs meant to respond to the needs of the communities they serve. Please come join us so we can share more about our programs & vision with you! Welcome back to our AISL community members, both returning and new! As always, we are thrilled to be part of this fantastic school & are ever grateful to the amazing students and families who make working here such a delight. If you are new, please come on in and let us introduce ourselves, show you around, and get to know you a bit. If you are returning, come see some of the changes we've made to the space!
We have two teacher-librarians, Ms. Jill Daley in the Primary School & Ms. Terry Maguire in the Secondary School, together with two library assistants, Mr. Sam Chabi & Mr. Lunyunge Sinyenga (who just welcomed his first child, baby Annette!). Our library is a place that invites collaboration, inquiry, exploration, reading, and relaxing. And yes, you can even eat and drink in here! Our big annual order should arrive soon and we will let you know when it's here so you can come see all the yummy new books we'll have for everyone. A few things you may not know about our space:
In the MYP there are six Global Contexts. Unit concepts can be placed in context using these Global Contexts and their strands and they help provide a common language for learning. Typically one Global Context is selected for the unit being studied. In this way, students understand why we are inquiring, why this is important and why we care! For example, if we are studying the concept of ‘compassion’ we could be exploring this through:
In order to help Grade 10 students identify a relevant Global Context for their Personal Project, we will be looking at artifacts in advisory on Monday and exploring how those artifacts are connected to each Global Context and a particular strand. Dear G1-G5 Parents, AISL Primary Talent show is coming soon! The date is set for Friday, September 21st at 11:00am in the PAC. This show is to be a celebration of our many talents. There will be no prizes; anyone who has the courage, persistence and commitment to prepare an act is a winner! In order for the show to be a success and to have as many performers as possible, we limit the time for each act to no more than one minute and a half. We also allow each student to be in only one act. The performance must be prepared at home and be consistent (the same each time). Any lyrics of songs must be appropriate for our young audience. Lip-syncing is not allowed. While there are tryouts, anyone who comes prepared and meets the above requirements will be invited to perform. Performance Plans with a parent’s signature must be submitted by Friday, 24 August. If you give permission for your child to participate, please ensure that your child fills out the Performance Plan, with your signature, and return it to his or her teacher before they can tryout. EACH performer must submit a plan, even if it is a group performance. Submission Deadline for Performance Plan/Parent Permission: Friday, 24 August Tryouts: Monday, 27 August – Friday, 7 September. Practice and Polish: Monday, 10 September - Friday, 14 September (No new acts at this time) Dress Rehearsal Week: Monday, 17 September – Friday, 21 September TALENT SHOW: Friday, 21 September at 11:00 a.m. in the PAC If you have any questions or comments, please email Ms. Natalie (ncoombs@aislusaka.org), Ms. Elisa (eingles@aislusaka.org), or Mr. Cormack (mcormack@aislusaka.org).
On Tuesday 21 August new and returning primary AISL parents gathered to participate in an introductory PYP workshop. The session reviewed the structure of the Primary Years Programme and how it continues to the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Program. Parents explored how AISL approaches the inquiry nature of the PYP as a framework for learning and engaged with a number of activities to deepen their understanding of the important elements of the PYP. If you would like to know further information please contact Christine Kelly, Assistant Principal: Teaching and Learning, PYP Coordinator
Session 1 After School Activities will run from Monday 20 August and until Friday 07 December. Please note that all vehicles will need to display their official sticker or a temporary one, as described below, from Monday, 20 August. Vehicles without stickers will have to be parked in the visitor's parking lot outside the Primary Gate. You may collect your parking stickers from Janke and Maché in the Primary and Secondary Offices, respectively. If you have a child in both the Primary and Secondary Schools, your sticker will be in the Primary Office.
We have moved to a new sticker system in order to better control access to campus. The new stickers will have each car’s registration number on them so that we can match any sticker with both the car and its owner. If you have not already entered your car registration numbers on OpenApply as requested via email, please go to one of the offices and submit your vehicle registration number. You will then be issued a temporary sticker while we print a permanent one for you. As always, the safety and security of children on campus is our priority so we appreciate your cooperation as we work to ensure that only authorized people can access the campus. What I am excited about this week…
A Smooth Start! The new school year got off to a smooth start last week. We welcomed more than one hundred new students and fifteen new teachers to the AISL community. It was fun to walk around the school and see the excitement that teachers, teaching assistants, admin staff, support staff, parents, AND students all brought to the day. The school was abuzz with everyone catching up with old friends and making new ones. It is such a joy to be a part of such a warm and caring community. Open Day/Open House Events! The best way to learn about our programs is to attend our upcoming Primary School Open Day and Secondary School Open House. The Primary School event will be held on 5 September from 07:25-12:20. The Secondary event will take place TONIGHT (16 August) starting at 17:00 in the Tiyende Pamodzi Theater. The "New" Gym! The newly-renovated gym is now open for business. Although there is still some landscaping work being finished on the site of the former parking lot, the interior renovations of the gym have been completed. The students started using it this week. If you have not had the chance, please take a moment and pop your head inside. I think you will be amazed at our “new” gym. The small lot that was next to the gym is now a landscaped social space, so please plan to park elsewhere. Tuesday Information Sessions! AISL is a very large organization with a lot of moving parts. The scale of our programs can be confusing to new – and even returning – parents. To help everyone get a better understanding of what we do, we host a weekly information session on some aspect of our programs all throughout the year. These sessions take place every Tuesday morning at 07:30 in the Protea Tree Conference Room (unless otherwise specified). Please get into the habit of coming by to have a coffee or tea and to learn something new about the school. We post the topics every week in the Leopard’s Tale. On the last Tuesday of each month we use this time slot for for PTA meetings, which I also hope you will attend. On 21 August, please join the Primary School Leadership team for our first information session: Introduction to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). |
