Keeping up with your child's media usage can be overwhelming for parents today. Most of us had to integrate into the digital world and were not born into it like our children. While we may laud the days-gone-by, we cannot ignore that our adolescents how have easier access to information than ever before in history. This includes topics and images that they may not be developmentally ready to handle. That's why it is important for parents to be on top of what their kids are doing online and the types of things they are watching or listening to. A great resource for all parents is commonsensemedia.org.
To celebrate your child’s birthday at school, parents may send a birthday snack to school to share with the class during a time pre-arranged with the class teacher. This is not a party! Please limit your celebration to a cake or small snack; no balloons or goody bags. As some of our students have allergies to specific foods, please make sure to ask your child’s teacher what ingredients must be avoided so that all students can enjoy the birthday treat.
Birthday party invitations may be distributed at school only if all the children in the class are invited or all the children of one gender are invited. We ask parents and students to be mindful that we are an inclusive school and to please take that into consideration when creating the guest list and/or talking about an upcoming birthday party in class.
Congratulations to all of our grade 12 students. To the relief of all of them, this morning was the conclusion of all IB DP exams. While we will wait patiently for the results to be released in July, we rest easy knowing that each and every one of these students is already a success. It is unfortunate that 14 years of hard work and dedication comes down to a few exams. In reality, the growth that every single grade 12 student has made is remarkable. We are extremely proud of all of them.
Once again, I invite the school community to help us celebrate the conclusion of extraordinary academic careers at AISL. The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2017 will be held Saturday, May 27 at 1400 in the PAC. We hope to see many of you there. As many of you know, Ms. Anne-Marie, one of our G2 teachers, is due to have a baby in July and will be leaving a few days before the end of the school year to give birth in the Netherlands. June 7th will be her last day in class for this academic year. In her absence, Ms. Andrea Mwalula will be covering her G2 class. She will transition with the class beginning May 31st so that there will be a very smooth handover for the current class of G2 students. Ms. Mwalula is a former AISL Primary Teacher, having taught in both the early childhood and primary sections of the school. She is a trained PYP teacher and familiar with our curriculum here at the school. She will finish the year in Anne-Marie’s class as well as begin the next school year with the new G2 class until Anne-Marie returns to AISL on November 1st. We look forward to welcoming Ms. Mwalula as part of our team.

What I am excited about this week…
The Torpedoes Swim Club recently held its Annual Award Ceremony at AISL. Many of the club's 46 swimmers and their parents attended a celebration of personal achievement and sportsmanship, followed by a Team social. Mr Guy Phiri, President of the Zambian Amateur Swimming Association (ZASU), presided as Master of Ceremonies and in his opening remarks, mentioned Ralph Goveia, a beginner swimmer from AISL, and now the first Zambian swimmer to attain Olympic classification times. Coaches Ian Stephenson and Walid Sammoud commended every swimmer for their achievements over the 2016 - 2017 season. Over the season, more than 730 Personal Best times were attained (PBs) and more than 20 Zambian and ZASU records were broken. The evening had also some emotional moments when the Team Captains, Naested and Fleur, praised the departing members: Coach Walid, Tom, Austin, Tyler and Lulu. It's been both an amazing yet challenging season. The Torpedoes Swim Club has completed it's first season operating independently from AISL. The Club are proud to be associated with the school, and are extremely grateful for the support they have received from the school this season.
