In order to reach IB’s requirement of 240 hours in our Higher Level (HL) Course and ensure our Standard Level (SL) Course do not have more than 150 hours, we have revised our Secondary schedule for our DP 1 and 2 students (Grades 11 and 12)
Students in DP 1 and 2 are only required to be in class at 7:30 if it is one of their HL course. If a student has a SL course scheduled at 0730, they are not required to be in school until 0845. This will begin on Monday, 21 August 2017. Therefore DP 2 students in HL Geography and DP 1 students in HL Mathematics will have to be in class at 0730. For all other DP students, their first class will begin at 0850. A lounge area has been set up for any students that arrive on campus before 0845 and as always they are welcome in the library. All students that arrive on campus before 0845 should check in at the Secondary Office. Next week’s schedule: (Friday’s time schedule has not changed. The school day still ends at 1300.)

It has been a smooth start to the school year with wonderful learning happening in all classes across the school. As we finish off our second week of school, please make note of the following:
On Wednesday, 23 August, the AISL Primary School will be having their annual Open Day. From 7h25-12h20, parents (G1-G5) are welcome to visit the campus, observe their child's classes, and attend a variety of information sessions. To provide the smoothest school day for our youngest learners, families with children in ELC and Kindergarten are invited to attend the information sessions only and requested not to attend classes. Below is a schedule of the different information sessions offered throughout the morning. We encourage all parents to attend the grade-level information sessions for each of their children in the Primary school as these will be opportunities to learn more about the program for the coming year. Additionally, there will be information sessions that will focus on our specialist classes, our student support team, an introduction to MAP testing (G2-10), and an introduction to SeeSaw. We look forward to seeing many families on this special day. If you have any further questions, please see your child's classroom teacher or Ms. Huson, the Primary Principal. We will be happy to help you in any way we can. Thank you to all the parents that could attend the "Introduction to the PYP" presentation this morning. Attached is the presentation that was shared, both in view and PDF download format. Please contact Christine Kelly, Primary Assistant Principal: Teaching and Learning, PYP Coordinator (ckelly@aislusaka.org) if you have any questions or comments.
We provide numerous opportunities to learn about AISL. The best sources are the weekly Leopard’s Tale newsletter, the website, informational parent mornings, and the upcoming Open Day in the Primary School and Open House night in the Secondary School. We work very hard to provide a lot of information about the school because we want our parents to understand and appreciate the very wide range of programs we offer. We are proud of our programs and want you to learn more so you can be equally proud that you have made the decision to join the AISL community. Please dedicate a few minutes each week to learning more about AISL. It is a great way to remain involved in your son or daughter’s education.
First and foremost, please get into the habit of reading our weekly Leopard’s Tale newsletter. It is the authoritative source for up-to-date information about our programs and upcoming events. A significant amount of time and energy is dedicated to publishing it each week so please ensure that you take advantage of this rich resource. We try to avoid cluttering your inbox with a lot of emails and prefer instead to use this one consolidated source. Second, Tuesday mornings are Parent Mornings at AISL. Please get into the habit of sticking around after drop off on Tuesday mornings to learn more about the school. To help all parents understand the many facets of our school, we offer an ongoing series of informational sessions on Tuesday mornings from 07:30-08:30. If you can, please plan to join us for a coffee or tea and learn more about AISL. One Tuesday morning per month will be dedicated to the PTA’s monthly meeting. All of these sessions take place in the Protea Tree Conference Room unless otherwise noted. Here are some upcoming sessions:
Finally, please make an effort to attend the upcoming Open Day/Open House events in the Primary School and Secondary School, respectively. These events will provide you with an overview of our academic programs and then the chance to meet our teachers. Watch the school-specific sections of the Leopard’s Tale for more details.
As you know, AISL is committed to campus security. An important aspect of this commitment is controlling access to our campus. As of August 18th, only vehicles with a current 2017-18 AISL parking sticker will be allowed to pass through the gates. This sticker can be displayed anywhere on the windscreen on the driver's side of the car. Cars without stickers will have to park in the visitor parking spots just outside the Primary School gate.
If you have not done so, please collect your parking sticker(s) from any of the school offices. All families get two free stickers and subsequent ones cost K10. Kindly remove any old parking stickers from your vehicle(s). What I am excited about this week… 1.A smooth start! The new school year got off to a smooth start on Tuesday. We welcomed more than one hundred new students and eight new teachers to the AISL community. It was fun to walk around the school and see the excitement that teachers, teaching assistants, admin staff, support staff, parents, AND students all brought to the day. The school was abuzz with everyone catching up with old friends and making new ones. I felt privileged to be a part of such a warm and caring community. 2.The new Early Learning Center! Over the holiday, Mr. Biggs and his crew renovated the Early Learning Center to accommodate our new multi-age program for our youngest learners. The new open concept allows our 3-5 year olds to move from station to station in flexible groups based on their particular developmental needs. This flexible space and a very favorable teacher to student ratio will provide a highly personalized learning experience. 3.A new Security Manager! In collaboration with our security provider, USI, we have added a Security Manager to our team. Based in the main office, Mike Mills will be working with us to improve our infrastructure, protocols, and training in order to ensure a high level of safety and security for everyone on campus. Many thanks to USI for their support. 4.No more overhead wires! Over the holiday, we embarked on a large project to improve the electrical infrastructure on campus. This included removing redundant transformers, installing modern feeder pillars and substations, relocating one of our gensets, and burying most of our overhead wires. As a result, I am excited to report that our new electrical infrastructure is much safer, more efficient, and more aesthetically pleasing. Please take a look at the before and after pictures below to appreciate the significant aesthetic enhancements this project has made to our lovely campus.
Dear Primary Families, It has been wonderful to see so many familiar faces back at school for another great year. I also want to extend a very warm welcome to all of our new families and, in some cases, families returning back to AISL after a few years away. We have a few notes/reminders to consider in the coming days:
